'Ploning' loses 'Oscar' chances

From 65 submitted entries from different countries, the choices for Oscar Awards 2009: Best Foreign Language Film category have been trimmed down to just 9 and unfortunately, Philippine's bet 'Ploning' starring Judy Ann Santos isn't one of them.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nine (9) films and they move on to the next round of voting, where each has another chance of being one of the 5 (5) official nominees.

The 9 films include:

"Revanche," directed by Gotz Spielmann (Austria)
"The Necessities of Life," directed by Benoit Pilon (Canada)
"The Class," directed by Laurent Cantet (France)
"The Baader Meinhof Complex," directed by Uli Edel (Germany)
"Waltz With Bashir," directed by Ari Folman (Israel)
"Departures," directed by Yojiro Takita (Japan)
"Tear This Heart Out," directed by Roberto Sneider (Mexico)
"Everlasting Moments," directed by Jan Troell (Sweden)
"3 Monkeys," directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey)

Notice that there are three Asian contenders in the Top 9( from Israel, Japan and Turkey).

Israel's entry Waltz with Bashir has just won as Best Foreign Language Film at the recently concluded Golden Globe Awards 2009.

With that, 'Ploning' had tough competitors in its own region and found it hard to move farther.

Last month, I made a post about the Oscars 2009 Best Foreign Language Films predictions and 'Ploning' was not even one of the favorites in the category.

Big favorite Gomorra (Italy), which already earned Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards nominations, unfortunately missed the cut in this year's Oscars in favor of the surprising entries from Japan, Mexico and Turkey.

The official nominees for the Best Foreign Language Film as well as in other categories will be announced on January 22, 2009.
