The 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival will officially start on May 13th in France. The opening film will be the Disney Pixar film Up, which is directed by Monsters, Inc. director Pete Docter.
It will be a first in the history of Festival de Cannes that a 3D animated film will serve as the opening film.
Up, which is a non-competition film for the top prize Palme d'Or or the Golden Palm, will be released in the US on May 29th, 2 weeks after the opening of 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
Twenty (20) films will be in competition for the Palme d'Or prize and that includes the Filipino film Kinatay (The Execution of P), which is directed by Brillante Mendoza who was also in competition for the top prize last year via the film Serbis.
Kinatay stars Coco Martin, Mercedes Cabral, Maria Isabel Lopez and John Regala. Martin and Cabral were also part of Serbis. Mercedes Cabral, amazingly, is also part of the Korean movie Thirst, one of the 20 competing films.
Director Mendoza will compete against big time and Oscar-winning directors in the world such as Spain's Pedro Almodovar for Broken Embraces (starring Penelope Cruz), Britain's Andrea Arnold for Fish Tank, New Zealand's Jane Campion for Bright Star (starring Paul Schneider), USA's Ang Lee for Taking Woodstock, USA's Quentin Tarantino for Inglorious Basterds (starring Brad Pitt) and 2006 Cannes' Golden Palm winner from the UK Ken Loach for Looking For Eric.
Three more Pinoy films will be participating in the said festival.
Raya Martin's Independencia, starring Tetchie Agbayani, Sid Lucero and Alessandra De Rossi, has been chosen for exhibition under "Un Certain Regard" section. Agbayani's role was first offered to the Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos, but the latter begged off due to conflict of schedules because she was to shoot for her next movie with Star Cinema tentatively titled A Mother's Story, with John Lloyd Cruz and Luis Manzano.
The film will compete for the Prix Un Certain Regard award.
Manila, jointly directed by Adolf Alix Jr. and Raya Martin, will also be part under "Special Screenings", but not competing for any prize. The movie's cast includes Piolo Pascual, Rosanna Roces, Jay Manalo and Alessandra De Rossi.
Under 'Short Films Corner', Sabongero (Cockfighter) by Janice Y. Perez has also been shortlisted.
Heath Ledger's last film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will also be screened in the festival, but it's also out of the competition. It also stars Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farell, who all replaced Ledger in the movie.
The closing film for the 62nd Cannes Film Festival will be France's Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.
The awarding and closing ceremony is scheduled on the 24th of May.
