While I'm writing this, David Cook and David Archuleta probably have arrived from the US for their May 16 concert at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds in Manila.
The David & David Live in Manila concert is produced by Jomari Yllana-owned Fearless Productions.
It is actually the first ever concert together by David Cook and David Archuleta since they emerged as the 'Top 2' in American Idol Season 7. Cook was the winner while Archuleta was the runner-up.
Ricky Lo of the Philippine Star had an exclusive interview via phone with Archuleta before he left for his concert here.
And there, it was revealed that David Archuleta knows our very own Regine Velasquez. According to David, Regine was the reason why he's now a bigger fan of Mariah Carey.
As we all know, Regine was once considered the local version of Mariah. She used to sing Mariah Carey hits in some of her concerts, especially during her Reflections Concert Series.
Archuleta was also asked the kind of girls he gets attracted to, but quick to add his focus, for now, is not on girls. Sorry girls!
So, that means his focus is on boys? (Just kidding!) Very much nooooo, coz he is concentrating on his career.
Check out David A's interview with Ricky Lo:
Your fans in the Philippines are waiting for you.
“Oh, I’m happy to hear that. I can’t wait to go to the Philippines.”
Anyway, David, what have you heard about the Philippines?
“I’ve heard that it’s very hot there.”
Aside from that?
“I’ve heard that there are a lot of amazing singers from the Philippines.”
Like who?
“My favorite is Regine Velasquez. She was actually the one who got me to be an even bigger fan of Mariah Carey because she was singing all those Mariah Carey songs that I’ve never heard before. ‘Wow.’ I said, ‘Regine is so good; she’s amazing’.’”
David, do you remember Ramiele Malubay, the Filipina who was with you and the other David in American Idol?
“Oh yeah, I remember her. Have you talked to her before?”
Yes, I did. That was in October last year in L.A. when I bumped into Ramiele during the concert of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes who are popular stars in the Philippines. Ramiele didn’t perform, she only watched the concert.
“Oh, really?”
What did Ramiele tell you about the Philippines?
“Oh, not much. Ramiele was always talking to her mom in Tagalog. She taught me a few Tagalog words.”
Did Ramiele make you taste Filipino food?
“No, she didn’t have a chance to do that. We didn’t have enough time to go to a Filipino restaurant.”
Don’t people mistake you for the other David, or vice-versa?
“Not really. Each of us is now into his own thing although not necessarily in different worlds.”
How has American Idol changed your life?
“Oh, very much! I won’t be in London now if not for American Idol. It has changed me in a way that I have never ever imagined. It has changed me so much. I went on an American Idol tour, I’m doing my own solo tour and now I’m doing my first solo album. So much in my life has changed.”
And now, the girls are all over you and the other David.
“I dont’ know. It’s something that I find weird. I just think of that as people who enjoy the music. I don’t think of it as girls being all over me.”
What type of girls do you find attractive?
“I like girls who can get along with people, who care about other people, who are fun and adventurous, who have a strong sense of self and who don’t put themselves down. That’s the kind of girl I am waiting for.”
Oh, you’re still looking for one.
“Not that I’m looking for one. My focus now is on my career, my work, and not on girls. “
David, you have been likened to Paul Anka. How do you feel about that?
“Oh, that’s cool! He’s a big star during his time, an icon up to this day. He has lasted this long and it’s an honor to be likened to him.”
What can we expect from your and the other David’s concert in the Philippines?
“Everybody will have a fun time. It’s our first show together and our first time to perform in the Philippines which has a soft spot in my heart. During the American Idol, I got so much support from Filipinos. They sent me gifts and stuff like that, and I really appreciate that and am very grateful to them for that.”
Do you plan to see other places in Manila?
“Do you have any suggestions?”
Well, you can visit the bars and do some girl-watching. There are a lot of beautiful girls in Manila.
“I talked to Enrique Iglesias yesterday and I couldn’t believe when he told me that he’s half-Filipino. He did tell me about the bars and stuff like that. But I’m not really the kind of person who goes to bars. I like parties but not all the time.”
How do you spend your free time?
“I listen to music. It’s still music for me. I’m a music freak.”

During Archuleta’s arrival in the Philippines, several blogs reported that the singer was fascinated with Filipina singer Regine Velasquez. Velasquez, who failed to impress Clive Davis and Simon Cowell with a demo of twelve songs, was rejected and sought for redemption in an Archuleta publicity instead. In Archuleta’s official Twitter,[25] Archuleta officially confirmed that it was Filipina singer Charice who captured his attention the most, after seeing her perform “Note to God” in Oprah and meeting her in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and not Velasquez, who was only mentioned to his team by Jomari Yllana, a concert promoter in the Philippines, five minutes after his arrival in Manila.[26] Archuleta went on to say that he purchased Charice’s single the day it was released. Also, Archuleta’s publicists confirmed that the Velasquez issue was a contractual publicity agreement during the tour between GMA’s Cacai Velasquez-Mitra, concert promoter Jomari Yllana, and Archuleta’s team, and that Velasquez should be mentioned in his public appearances in the country, to boost Velasquez’ dismal exposure in the international scene. During his entire stay, Archuleta was forced to appreciate Velasquez during his press conferences, as part of the contract[27]. Until now, Velasquez’ representatives refuse to comment on their alleged fraud to deceive Filipino fans.
ReplyDeleteAccording the the Grammy Academy, Velasquez spends most of her time trying to copy other International Super stars, such as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and especially Mariah Carey. It was her excessive work in doing covers of those mentioned singers that made her shot to stardom. Later down the years, it was clear which way she was heading with her works.
ReplyDeleteClive Davis comments, "Velasquez tends to enjoy screaming on her songs so she can be 'leveled' as high as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, but the excessive plagiarism off Mariah Carey's work is the one that made her famous around the world. She decided to get a butterfly tattoo knowing that Mariah has one. She sings more of Mariah's songs more than hers".
Aretha Franklin says, "The non-stop screaming on her performance is what she tries to compensate the lack of emotion and range on her songs. Noted on 'Emotion' cover performance, she screamed louder than ever to make up the lack of whistle register that's of Mariah's".
Quoting the legendary Simon Cowell who says, "Would we ever know Regine if there's no Mariah, Whitney, or Celine Dion? Would she be famous and has those awards if she has not tried all of her life copying what others have done and added a little twist so the fans can say its better? I'm sure it's questionable". This has been his statement regarding Velasquez' popularity in the Philippines.
