The Philippine Azkals will face Palestine on Monday, March 19, the last day of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal.
The Azkals vs Palestine match is a battle for 3rd place in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup, with North Korea vs Turkmenistan in the championship game happening also the same day.
While it's both the first time for Palestine and the Philippines to reach the semi-finals of the AFC Challenge Cup and vie for the 3rd slot, it's now the 2nd consecutive time that North Korea and Turkmenistan face each other in the finals.
During the last AFC Challenge Cup held in 2010, North Korea was the winner with Turkmenistan in 2nd place.
It's still a big achievement for the Philippines to be part of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup semis.
During the group stage, the team was able to beat 2006 champion Tajikistan and the 2008 champion India.
As for their match against Palestine this coming Monday, there's a strong chance that Azkals might win and get the 3rd slot. During the qualification stage held last year in Iraq, Azkals already faced Palestine and it resulted to a goal-less draw.
Meanwhile, Azkals' striker Phil Younghusband is so far the leading goal scorer in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup.
Before their 3rd place game this Monday, Phil has already scored 4 goals, the highest goals scored so far in the tournament.
He scored 2 goals last Mar. 11 during their match vs India, another one in their match against Tajikistan last Mar. 13 and finally, 1 goal scored during yesterday's game vs Turkmenistan.
As of this point, Phil Younghusband is the leading contender for the "Golden Shoe Award" (aka Golden Boot), an award given to the top goal scorer of the tournament.
Other contenders include North Korea's Pak Nam-Chol I (3 goals), Jang Kuk-Chol (2 goals), Pak Kwang-Ryong (2 goals) and Turkmenistan's Arslanmyrat Amanow and Gahrymanberdi Conkayew each with 2 goals.
Since there are 2 more games left, anyone of them can still get the Golden Boot award, but let's be positive that Phil will score more goals in their last game and get the award.
If ever, it will be the first time that Phil will get the Golden Shoe award from a major international tournament. Goodluck Phil!
