It's the final showdown between Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips in the 1-hour American Idol 2012 Season 11 Finale Performance Show Tuesday night, May 22, 2012 (Wednesday morning, May 23 MLA Time).
American Idol 2012 Top 2 finalists Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips each had 3 songs as their finale performances: 1 is a song picked by "Idol" creator Simon Fuller, 1 is their personal choice and finally, the "winner's single".
Jessica Sanchez was the first to perform during the finale as determined thru a toss coin with Phillip Phillips. The toss coin happened right after the Top 3 results show last Thursday. Phillips won and had the option to choose whether to sing first or last. He chose to sing last.

First round had Jessica Sanchez singing Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" while Phillips performed "Stand By Me" as the songs picked for them by Simon Fuller.
Jessica obviously won Round 1 for me. That's what you call a finale performance. She had the competitive spirit, she had the drive to win, that's why she gave her best on that one.
Phillips meanwhile has used his charisma once again to satisfy the screaming girls. It's like he was only there to sing and not to compete.
While Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez couldn't make an absolute choice, Randy Jackson thought Jessica "probably" owned Round 1.
And for their 2nd performances, the Top 2 finalists had to pick a song from their previous performances.
Jessica Sanchez chose to sing "The Prayer", which she performed during the 'Sing For Your Life' Top 42 round and earned her a slot in the Top 25, while Phillip Phillips had "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" as his choice, which was his song from the Top 10 'Billy Joel' round.
It's Jessica's round again, but the judges were divided. JLo believed Phillips won Round 2 but Steven gave it to Jessica Sanchez, while Randy considered both finalists even in that round.
The 3rd and final round had the two singing a song which could be their first single if ever they win in American Idol 2012. It was assigned to them by "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine.

The judges didn't give much praises to Jessica but they loved Phillips' performance so much, and even gave him a standing ovation. Randy even considered Phillips' performance as his best performance of the night.

With Jimmy Iovine giving better "coronation song" to Phillip Phillips and the judges' standing ovation for Phillips, it's kinda obvious now who the show and the judges want to be the American Idol 2012 winner, but it is still the viewers' decision that matters the most.
The 2-hour American Idol 2012 Finale Results Show will be held Wednesday night (Thursday morning, MLA Time).
