Chief Justice Renato C. Corona took the witness stand in the 40th day of his impeachment trial at the Senate today, May 22, 2012.
On the witness stand, Chief Justice Renato Corona or simply CJ Corona denied the accusations being thrown against him in the impeachment trial, declaring that his conscience is clear. He even got emotional in the middle of his opening statement.
According to CJ Corona's opening statement, he has been living a simple life: "Hindi po kami gumagamit ng aircon kasi sakitin kami sa lamig. Wala po kaming katulong. Gano'n kasimple ang aming pamumuhay. Dalawa lang po pinagkakagastusan namin: pagkain at panggastos sa pagpapa-aral, kasi marami kaming pinapaaral."
Corona also denied having 82 dollar accounts, 45 properties nor 31 peso deposit accounts, and said that he only has 4 dollar accounts, 5 properties and 3 peso accounts, and has no properties in the US.
The Corona Impeachment Trial: Day 40, with CJ Corona on the witness stand, was aired live in all major TV networks in the country, thus it isn't surprising that it became the hottest topic on Twitter, landing on top of the trending list both in the Philippines and worldwide.
How did the Twitter users react on this real-life drama in the Senate?
I've been reading tweets about CJ Corona's impeachment trial while the Chief Justice was saying his opening statement and found these interesting, funny tweets, some of which came from popular celebs who were also actively making reactions on Twitter about the CJ Corona impeachment trial.
Anne Curtis' boyfriend Erwan Heussaff (@erwanheussaff): "CJ Corona takes the stand. This is the best thing since Star Wars." "I think I read better Tagalog than him."
ABS-CBN reporter Niko Baua (@nikobaua): "Bukas sa headline, "CJ Corona walang maid, naiyak!""
@marcolacsamana: "CJ Corona took Theatre Arts in Harvard ata. It shows na 'yun ang passion nya."
@solid_ABSCBN: "CJ Corona: Hindi po kami gumagamit ng AIRCON. Wee? Sa init ng panahon ngayon?"
Chokoleit (@CHOKOLEiTWiTS): ""I am not a creature of your gov't!" - Lady Gaga. "I am not a creature of the present administration!" CJ Corona."
Vice Ganda (@vicegandako): "We have a Chief Justice from Harvard who's not even a good public speaker. Horrible!"
@carlowe: "The Chief Justice has been reduced to tears while talking about diet and non-use of aircon."
CJ CORONA WALKS OUT OF THE IMPEACHMENT COURT
After his almost 3-hour opening statement, Chief Justice Renato Corona abruptly stood up and walked out of the courtroom.
"And the Chief Justice of the Republic of the Philippines would like to be excused," said CJ Corona, then he stood up and left the impeachment court, even if he wasn't permitted yet to leave by the presiding officer, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile (JPE).
Even lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas was stunned by CJ Corona's "walk-out".
It was later revealed by his own lawyers that CJ Corona, who's diabetic, wasn't feeling well and had to be checked by a doctor because his blood sugar reportedly went down.
According to the defense team's spokesperson Atty. Karen Jimeno, as shared by ABS-CBN reporter Ryan Chua on Twitter, Corona didn't intend to leave Senate. He was reportedly not feeling well so he wanted to be excused from the impeachment court, but will return to the witness stand for the direct and cross examination.
Jimeno further said that CJ Corona went out of the Session Hall not to leave, but to look for someone to assist him.
With that move after a very lengthy opening statement, wasn't it a clear attempt by CJ Corona to delay the impeachment trial?
He later returned to the impeachment court, this time on a wheelchair, lookin' ill and pitiful.
The impeachment trial for today was adjourned after that, and CJ Corona will return on the witness stand when it resumes tomorrow, May 23, at 2PM. © www.mykiru.ph
