'The Dark Knight Rises' has topped the weekend box-office (July 20-22, 2012) in the US and Canada with a gross of $160.9-million, according to Warner Bros.

It becomes the 3rd highest opening weekend ever behind 'The Avatar', a March 2012 release which had $207.4M, and 2011's biggest hit 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' with $169.2M opening weekend.

'The Dark Knight Rises', which is the 3rd Batman movie starring Christian Bale and directed by Christopher Nolan, could have earned more than the $160.9M opening weekend in the box office if only the massive shooting didn't happen during 'The Dark Knight Rises' premiere at a theater in Aurora, Colorado.

But still, it's a great start in the box office for 'The Dark Knight Rises', and even broke the record for the highest opening weekend for a 2D film, a record previously held by 'The Dark Knight' in 2008.

Outside US and Canada, 'The Dark Knight Rises' earned $88M last weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, making its worldwide box office total of $248.9M, already the 13th highest grossing film of 2012 and is expected to finish on 2nd spot behind 'The Avatar'.

Previous weekend's #1, 'Ice Age: Continental Drift' dropped to 2nd last weekend with $20.4M, followed by 'The Amazing Spider-Man' on its 3rd weekend with $10.9M.

Total worlwide gross for 'Ice Age 4' is now $529.3M while 'The Amazing Spider-Man' has $614.6M. - www.mykiru.ph
