'Chinese Zodiac', the Hong Kong Chinese movie starring action superstar Jackie Chan, easily conquered the Philippine Box Office during its opening weekend.
From its opening last January 30, 2013 up to its 5th day, February 3, 'Chinese Zodiac' or CZ12 has earned P35.90-million, to claim top spot in the Philippine box-office chart, as posted at Box Office Mojo website.
Released by the Philippines' top film outfit Star Cinema, it's quite a successful start considering that a lot of illegal copies were already available online and in the country days before its premiere last January 30. (The movie was already shown last December in Hong Kong, where it was produced, as well as in 5 more countries.)
In 2nd spot in the Philippine box office last weekend is the 3D movie 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' earning P26.62M, and now with a 12-day total of P87.70M.
My personal favorite 'Warm Bodies' (I highly recommend this film) is in far 3rd with only P6.24M, but it was shown in only 60 theaters, which is half as the theaters allotted for each of the Top 2 movies.
4th spot went to another new foreign release, 'Gangster Squad', with P5.66M from 75 theaters, followed by 'Les Miserables' in 5th with P4.52M, for a 3-week total of P76.37M.
And this could be the biggest box office disappointment last week: the Filipino film 'Seduction' was given 90 theaters and only grossed P3.67-million, good for 6th, behind 5 foreign films.
Isn't it shameful that more Pinoys opted to watch those 5 foreign films than our very own movie? Something should be done to avoid this from happening again.
Obviously, 'Seduction', which is produced by Regal Films and starring Richard Gutierrez, Solenn Heussaff and Sarah Lahbati, failed to match the box office performances of other adult romance-drama films shown in the last 2 years ('No Other Woman', 'A Secret Affair'). It even grossed lower than 'My Neighbor's Wife', also a romance drama film produced by Regal in 2011 and earned P14.6M during its opening week.
Completing the Top 10 chart last week are 'Parker', 'The Man with the Iron Gists', 'Life of Pi' (P135.15M after 8 weeks) and 'The Impossible'. - Mykiru.ph
