Iran was struck by another strong earthquake today, April 16, 2013, exactly a week after the 6.3-magnitude earthquake which hit the country and killed at least 37 people. The new earthquake was measured at 7.8-magnitude by the US Geological Survey (USGS), with epicenter at 83km East of Khash, Iran.
Major casualties are expected, with latest count of at least 40 people.
Pakistan was also hit by same earthquake, with at least 9 people dead, according to CNN.
The quake was so strong that it was also felt in U.A.E, Saudi Arabia, and even in New Delhi, India.
Two of my friends who are not in Iran, one is in Dubai, UAE and the other one is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, shared to me that they were able
to feel the earthquake.
My friend Augs, a club DJ, who was in his room at Ramee International Hotel in Dubai said that the earthquake caused panic among hotel guests, and they had to rush out of the building, which shook for 15 seconds. He was at the 9th floor of the hotel when it happened.
Same was experienced by my college batchmate Clint who is in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia. According to him, they were able to feel intense shaking
which lasted 5 seconds or more.
Let's pray for the safety of our kababayans in Iran and across Middle East.
It was the 2nd strong earthquake in Iran this month, and only 8 months after the country was hit by a 6.4-magnitude quake which killed over 300 people.
It's also said to be the 3rd strongest earthquake ever to hit Iran, and almost as strong as the 1978 earthquake with reported casualties of 15,000 people.
