The Voice of the Philippines Pilot Episode: The Blind Auditions

'The Voice of the Philippines' premiered Saturday night, June 15, 2013, on ABS-CBN. So how was it?
Hosted by Toni Gonzaga with Robi Domingo and Alex Gonzaga as V Reporters, 'The Voice of the Philippines' featured on its pilot episode the first round of "Blind
Auditions", where the auditionees sang in front of the coaches / judges namely Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo, Lea Salonga and Black Eyed Peas' Apl.De.Ap, with the coaches' chairs turned back from the stage.
Who got the judges to turn around for them? And who failed? Let's meet the first batch of hopefuls on 'The Voice of the
Philippines' as featured on its pilot episode earlier.
DARRYL SHY, 44 years old, from Baguio City - the first auditionee to step on 'The Voice Philippines' stage, and he was also the first to advance.
A full-time
"musikero", married with kids, Darryl sang with a guitar his own version of Bamboo's "Tatsulok". I was expecting Bamboo to turn his chair, but he
didn't. It was only Lea and Apl.de.Ap who pushed the button and turned
their chairs. He chose Lea to be his coach.
DEBORAH VICTA, 21, Laguna - event organizer. I love her name. She's so beautiful, but nothing special in her voice as she sang "American Boy". But she can
pass for a girl group.
Only one judge (Bamboo) turned his chair for her and she automatically joined his team (Team Kawayan).
Visibly amazed by her beauty, Sarah regreted that she didn't turn her
chair around: "Nagsisisi ako."
ROMEL COLAO, 32, Bukidnon - a balut vendor - singing Gary V's "Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos?". No judges turned their chairs. Apl.de.ap
gave his belt as a consolation.
ANDY GO "Ngayon At Kailanman" - also did not advance.
MEL KEVIN IBAÑEZ "Let Me Be The One". He dedicated his song to Sarah by including her name in the last part of the song: "So I'm telling you, Sarah, I love you one last time, and goodbye". But sadly he failed to convince her and the other 3 judges to push the button.
CHERRY MAE "CHIEN" BERBAÑA, 31, Zamboanga Sibugay. She did Aegis'
"Sayang Na Sayang" and got Apl.de.Ap to turn his chair, followed by
Lea. She chose the latter.
THOR DULAY, 32, Davao del Norte - married for 2 years - a vocal coach and singer. He shared in a pre-taped interview that he's Vice Ganda's backup singer on 'Gandang Gabi Vice'. I remember him as one of the performers at the wedding reception of Richard Poon and Maricar Reyes last Sunday.
And for his performance, Thor did an impressive take of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing", so impressive that he got all 4 judges to turn around (in this order: Lea, Sarah, Bamboo, Apl.de.ap). Vice Ganda happened to be watching at the audience and was shouting "Lea!", convincing him to join Lea's team, but Thor opted to join Team Apl.de.Ap.
That's it for the first episode of 'The Voice of the Philippines', and
the blind auditions continue on tomorrow's episode, June 16. Hopefully
Sarah will finally have the first finalist to join her team (probably that cute guy being shown in the teaser, to whom Sarah made the "witiwiw!" remark).
Good job The Voice Philippines! I think it's gonna be addicting. Love
it! I just wish Toni Gonzaga will change a bit the way she's hosting here
(not PBB style please?).
