FIBA Asia 2013 Quarterfinals will be on August 9, 2013, with 8 qualified teams: 4 from Group E and 4 from Group F.
The 2nd Round of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship wrapped up before midnight Wednesday, Aug. 7, but the 8 teams who have qualified for the quarterfinals were already known at 7:30PM, after China defeated Bahrain (66-88).
From Group E, the qualified teams are the Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Qatar and Jordan, while the qualifiers from Group F are Iran, Korea, China and Kazakhstan.
Here's how they qualified:
GROUP E FINAL TEAM STANDINGS
1. Philippines 4 wins-1 loss (9 pts) - advanced
2. Chinese Taipei 4-1 (9 pts) - advanced
3. Qatar 4-1 (9 pts) - advanced
4. Jordan 2-3 (7 pts) - advanced
5. Japan 1-4 (6 pts) - eliminated
6. Hong Kong 0-5 (5 pts) - eliminated
If you notice, it was a 3-way tie among the Philippines, Chinese Taipei and Jordan. To break the tie, the Points Differential (PD) from the game results between the tied teams was used. PD is the difference between Points For (PF) and Points Against (PA). To get that, let's recap first the final scores from the games played by PHI, TPE and QAT against each other.
PHI vs TPE: 79-84
PHI vs QAT: 80-70
TPE vs QAT: 68-71
From there, we can now get the PF, PA and PD.
PHILIPPINES:
PF (79+80 = 159)
PA (84+70 = 154)
PF - PA = PD (159-154 = +5)
CHINESE TAIPEI:
PF (84+68 = 152)
PA (79+71 = 150)
PF - PA = PD (152-150 = +2)
QATAR:
PF (70+71 = 141)
PA (80+68 = 148)
PF - PA = PD (141-148 = -7)
With the highest PD among the 3, Philippines took No. 1 slot, followed by Chin. Taipei in #2 and Qatar in 3rd.
For Group F, there was nothing much of a problem in ranking the 6 teams.
GROUP F FINAL TEAM STANDINGS
1. Iran 5 wins-0 loss (10 pts) - advanced
2. Korea 4-1 (9 pts) - advanced
3. China 3-2 (8 pts) - advanced
4. Kazakhstan 2-3 (7 pts) - advanced
5. Bahrain 1-4 (6 pts) - eliminated
6. India 0-5 (5 pts) - eliminated
