Iran has won the Gold Medal against Gilas Pilipinas at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship Finals after the host team struggled in their game without the help of its top rebounder Marcus Douthit, who did not play due to an injury.
First Quarter scores were so close at 15-17 for Iran and even went closer after the 1st half, 34-35, still for Iran.
In the 3rd quarter, Iran had a comfortable lead of 11, 53-62. And it ended with a 14-point win by the Iranian team.
Hamed Haddadi with 29 pts and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami with 19 pts led the scorers from Iran while Gilas Pilipinas' Jayson Casto scored 18 points.
As for the top performers, it's Hamed Haddadi again for Iran who recored 29 pts, 16 rebs and 2 blks, while it's Jimmy Alapag for the Philippines with 11 pts, 8 rebs and 2 stls.
It's worth noting that Haddadi stands 7'2", while Alapag is only 5'9". That makes big difference and definitely Iran had the height advantage.
The championship title is not back to Iran after losing it in the 2011 FIBA Asia, where they only finished 5th, after they were defeated by Jordan during the semis.
They're also the only team this 2013 tournament to finish with a clean record of 9 wins and no loss.
With 29 points and 16 rebounds, Hamed Haddadi led Iran once again to their 3rd FIBA Asia Championship Title. It was also Haddadi who led Iran when they won same in the 2007 and 2009 tournaments, where he was also the back-to-back Most Valuable Player.
And the MVP award this 2013 also went back to him.
Gilas Pilipinas meanwhile won the Silver Medal, while Korea took Bronze. In 2011 FIBA Asia, Korea was also 3rd, while Gilas was 4th.
The All-Star Team awardees for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship were: Jayson Castro of the Philippines (Point Guard), Kim Min-Goo of South Korea (Shooting Guard), Lin Chih-chieh of Chinese Taipei (Small Forward), Oshin Sahakian of Iran (Power Forward) and the MVP, Hamed Haddadi of Iran (Center).
Iran, Philippines and Korea, as the Top 3 placers in FIBA Asia Championship 2013, are all going to Spain next year for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
