'Diary Ng Panget The Movie' has already hit the P100-million box-office mark 12 days after it opened in theaters last April 2. This makes lead stars James Reid and Nadine Lustre as Philippine cinema's newest box office stars.
Viva Films has finally scored a major hit after many misses such as 'ABNKKBSNPLAko?! The Movie', 'When the Love is Gone', 'Bekikang: Ang Nanay Kong Beki' etc. (not considering their co-productions with Star Cinema which were really massive hits). The film company's last big hit (solo production) was the 2012 film 'A Secret Affair', which starred Anne Curtis and Derek Ramsay, and earned P118.42M.
Based on the report released by Box Office Mojo for the Philippine Box Office, 'Diary ng Panget The Movie', a romance comedy based on a top-selling book has banked in so far P102.86M as of April 13, 2014.
That's a big win for Viva Films, whose other film adaptation 'ABNKKBSNPLAko?! The Movie' released last February only earned P17M.
It's even more impressive that 'Diary ng Panget The Movie' stars Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teen edition winner James Reid and newbie Nadine Lustre who both have never headlined a movie. Their new loveteam (JaDine) truly deserves a follow-up movie (Diary ng Panget Part 2?).
The B-graded movie, which is directed by Andoy Ranay and also stars Andre Paras and Yassi Pressman, was able to survive strong competitions from Hollywood, 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and 'Rio 2', and still managed to bring in big numbers, to become the 3rd Pinoy film of 2014 to reach P100M (and it's only the 4th month of the year). The other two are 'Starting Over Again' (P410.19M) and 'Bride for Rent' (P326.96M), both from Star Cinema. (It's worth noting that ticket costs for 'Diary ng Panget' in some cinemas are lower than the 2 Star Cinema films.)
Forget last Feb's 'ABNKKBSNPLKO', 'Diary ng Panget The Movie' is the latest Filipino film based on books or literary pieces to perform really strong in the box-office, after last July's 'Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo?' (P102.37M).
The next film adaptation having a very strong potential to earn big in the box office is the Kathryn Bernardo-Daniel Padilla movie 'She's Dating the Gangster', which is produced by Star Cinema and already set for release later this year.
