'Talk Back And You're Dead' and Carla Abellana-Matteo Guidicelli movie 'Somebody To Love' both opened last August 20, and the box results are in: one stayed alive in the box office while the other was sooo dead.
As expected, the Viva-Skylight rom-com teen flick 'Talk Back And You're Dead' topbilled by the 2014 breakthrough stars James Reid and Nadine Lustre with the addition of Joseph Marco easily won the
competition versus another Pinoy romantic comedy film, 'Somebody To Love', produced by Regal Films and stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Abellana and Matteo Guidicelli.
Tabulation by Box Office Mojo showed that the B-graded TBYD earned P41.5-million from 132 screens while the A-graded STL only had a quarter of that, just P4.5-million from 80 screens.
Looks like it was a mismatch, and TBYD's real competition was actually that Japanese film 'Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno' which earned a million higher, P42.5M, from 136 screens.
Such a close fight between TBYD and RKYI. As per theater averages though, it's the Filipino film which performed better.
That P41.5M first 5 days of 'Talk Back and You're Dead' is way lower than last April's 'Diary ng Panget The Movie' which had P61.3M in its 1st 5 days despite opening against 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and also starred James Reid and Nadine Lustre.
But it's understandable 'coz the Philippine box office is usually slow during August.
While it becomes clear that TBYD won't match DNP's total gross of P119M, it's still a big win for a film headlined by neophyte movie stars.
That's not the same thing to say about 'Somebody To Love' which should've earned more than that especially with its ensemble of cast (Carla, Matteo, Iza Calzado, Jason Abalos, Maricar Reyes & more).
It's Carla Abellana's 3rd movie this year alone in a span of 6 months, and also her 3rd movie this year to open below P20M. Last March, her movie 'Third Eye' ultimately grossed just P10.2M and last May, her movie with Tom Rodriguez tallied P18M for its opening weekend all the way to a final gross of P25.5M. - Mykiru.ph
