The Miss World 2014 pageant in London has already reached half-way point, and the finale is coming near, happening in only 12 days from now. Some of the challenges are already through, and it has become clearer now who the real stand-outs are, who those heavy contenders are for the Miss World 2014 crown.
But before that, let's have a look first at the 3 Filipina beauties who are making us so proud in this year's edition of Miss World.
Miss Philippines Valerie Weigmann shared on Facebook the above photo of her with Miss New Zealand Arielle Garciano, taken during Sunday's Charity Gala and Auction Night. Miss New Zealand is also a half-Filipina, whose father's roots are from Cebu. It's my first time to see these two Pinay beauties together in a picture. Both lovely!
And of course, there's another Filipina we should not forget: Megan Young, the reigning Miss World from the Philippines, who still continues to shine even if her reign ends in less than 2 weeks from now.
It's amazing that Megan is such a great Miss World titleholder, that the people behind the pageant are making her a "standard" for this year's candidates in every activity that they do. True to what she said last year, Megan proved to be the best Miss World ever, and it would be awesome if the crown stays on the head of a Philippine candidate, this time it's Valerie Weigmann, who could be the best successor among 125 candidates.
Valerie failed to be one of the finalists during last week's Top Model competition, which Megan won last year, causing many of her fans to think that the chance to score a back-to-back victory for the Philippines has become slim. But not now, after she was named one of the 10 finalists for the Beauty with a Purpose award, which is a very important aspect in Miss World, for her 'Musikaramay' project for the indigenous people.
Joining Philippines in the Top 10 are Misses Brazil Julia Gama, Bolivia Andrea Forfori Aguilera, South Africa Rolene Strauss, England Carina Tyrrell, India Koyal Rana, Indonesia Maria Asteria Sastrayu, Kenya Idah Nguma, Netherlands Tatjana Maul and Guyana Rafieya Husain.
Last year, 4 of the Beauty with a Purpose Top 5 finalists finished in the Top 20 during the finals, 3 even entered Top 10 and 1 managed to reach Top 6. The award winner, Miss Nepal, was in the Top 10.
Yeah, the Top Model challenge is also important, as most of its winners eventually finished as a semifinalist or even won the Miss World crown. But let's not forget, Miss Peru Maria Julia Mantilla in 2004 and Miss Gibraltar Kaiane Aldorino in 2009 didn't make it as a Top Model finalist, but they won the crown.
Aside from the Beauty with a Purpose challenge, Valerie still has a pretty good chance in other challenges, such as Multimedia, People's Choice (where she's currently in the Top 10) and the Beach Beauty. I'm not just sure with the Talent challenge, where 5 of the 10 finalists have been revealed already: Canada Annora Bourgeault, Russia Anastasia Kostenko, Malaysia, Dewi Liana Seriertha, Scotland Ellie McKeating and United States Elizabeth Safrit.
At this point, Valerie's strongest competitors are probably Miss India and Miss South Africa who both have already placed as a finalist in these 3 challenges: Sport, Top Model and Beauty with a Purpose. They're also in the current Top 10 of the People's Choice voting being done at the Miss World app.
Other strong contenders are Misses Russia, France Flora Coquerel, Lebanon Saly Greige, Thailand Maeya Nonthawan Thonglen and Australia Courtney Thorpe. - Mykiru.ph
