The 2015 Philippine Box Office got off to a great start, thanks to a few good movies from Hollywood, which have been doing great so far, such as 'Night at the Museum 3: Secret of the Tomb', 'Seventh Son' and 'Taken 3'. One of them even became the 1st movie this 2015 to hit the
P100-million mark in the country's box-office chart.
20th Century Fox Philippines revealed in a statement released to Mykiru that 'Taken 3' has tallied P107M from over 200 screens within 5 days since it opened last January 14.
The action flick starring Liam Neeson will easily become the highest-grossing film from the 'Taken' franchise: the 1st "Taken" in 2009 had P8M after 3-week showing, while
"Taken 2", which was shown for 7 weeks in 2012 collected Php 139.8 million.
Other January releases 'Night at the Museum 3', 'Seventh Son', this week's 'American Sniper' and next week's 'Into the Woods' might soon follow 'Taken 3' as P100M-earning movie, or at least wind up close to that level.
Local film industry on one hand is yet to have its first legitimate hit. So far, 2 Pinoy movies already missed ('Tragic Theater', 'Edsa Whoolworth'), not like last year when at the same point, there was already a locally-produced blockbuster film: the Kim Chiu and Xian Lim movie 'Bride of Rent', which broke January records with P100M 4 days after it opened on Jan. 15 to a huge final gross of P326M - the biggest ever in the month of January, the 3rd biggest in 2014 and the 8th all-time highest-grossing Filipino film.
What could be the first Pinoy movie hit this 2015? Is it next week's 'Halik Sa Hangin', starring Gerald Anderson, Julia Montes and JC De Vera?
Possible. Though it won't be a super hit like 'Bride For Rent', it has an appealing trailer and intriguing story which could bring many moviegoers to theaters starting January 28. At least, it will finally start a string of hits for Star Cinema this year, to be followed by its Valentine 2015 offering, the movie starring Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, Gabby Concepcion and Lorna Tolentino. This KathNiel movie opening this February has the clear potential of becoming the 1st P100M-earning Filipino movie this year.
Next month actually is gonna be loaded with a slew of potential hits, the foreign-made films 'Jupiter Ascending' (Feb. 5), 'Paddington' feat. Xian Lim as the voice of Paddington bear (Feb. 11), 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (Feb. 11) and Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken' (Feb. 18), probably the reason why local producers have avoided to release a film in those dates. - Mykiru.ph
