President Noynoy Aquino tried to kiss Pope Francis' hand or the ring on his hand when they first met at the Villamor Airbase, but he failed.
The 2015 Papal Visit to the Philippines officially started yesterday, January 15, the day Pope Francis arrived in the country, following his visit to Sri Lanka. PNoy was personally there at the Villamor Airbase to lead the Arrival Ceremony for the pope, along with other government officials, such as VP Jejomar Binay, DILG Sec Mar Roxas and more.
Upon Pope Francis' arrival, that very first moment he sets foot in the Philippines, PNoy was the first to meet and greet the Pope and wish him a warm welcome, probably was also hoping to be the first to kiss his hand.
But sadly, as PNoy made an attempt to kiss Pope Francis' hand, the latter refused. He pulled away his hand and insisted to shake hands instead. (pictures are screen shots from the livestream by RTV Malacanang)
Was Pope Francis just trying to practice humility and so he didn't let the Philippines' highest-ranked official to kiss his hand?
Ouch for PNoy: Pope Francis allowed Vice President Jejomar Binay to kiss his hand.
Pnoy's failed attempt to kiss Pope's hand isn't the real issue here (nor the Pope's "zucchetto", the skullcap he wears, being blown by the wind while he was getting out of the plane, nor his cape covering his head due to strong wind while the Philippine National Anthem was being played), but it's the Filipino people's overwhelming experience to see Pope Francis visiting our beloved country. We are truly blessed to have Pope Francis in the country, to pray for us Filipinos, and most especially, to express solidarity with Typhoon Yolanda survivors.
On this video, Inquirer has summed up Pope Francis' 1st Day in the Philippines. Watch:
For his 2nd day in the country, the Pope will be having a courtesy call with PNoy 9AM at the Malacañang Palace, then later, he will celebrate mass at the Manila Cathedral and followed by a meeting with the families at Mall of Asia Arena, with The Voice Kids champion Lyca Gairanod peforming for the Pope.
Have a wonderful day everyone! - Mykiru.ph
